Form is Function

In architecture there is a dichotomy between the physical and the non physical. Space is given its shape by the physical yet it’s purpose lies within the air it surrounds. The white blank walls of modernity stand indifferent to the activities they contain. An architectural accessory is needed in the form of an installation that activates the built form as part of an interactive experience. Integrating the tactile qualities of installation with the programmatic function of architecture would eliminate the separation between a space and the objects within. An architecture defined by installation would engage the body and space with a fluid and dynamic purpose.

Touch: The Objectification of Architectural Space

In architecture there is a dichotomy between the physical and the non physical. Space is defined by the physical yet the negative is often the focus of our experience. The white blank walls of modernity sit indifferent to the activities they contain. The purpose of these spaces becomes grafted upon their container. An architectural accessory is needed to activate the physicality of space. Integrating the tactile qualities of installation with the programmatic function of architecture would eliminate the separation between a space and the objects within. An architecture defined by installation would engage the body and space with a fluid and dynamic purpose.

Manifesto for Tactile Space

In architecture there is a dichotomy between the physical and the non physical. Space is defined by the physical yet the negative is often the focus of our experience. The white blank walls of modernity sit indifferent to the activities they contain. The purpose of these spaces become grafted upon it’s container. An architectural accessory is needed to activate the tactility of space. An architecture defined by installation would eliminate the separation between a space and the objects within; unifying it with a fluid and dynamic  purpose.

 This architecture will…

promote the tactile over the visual
glorify the act of making
restore the honor of craft
allow for the unexpected
destroy the sterility of modernism
favor the raw over the refined, the chaotic over the ridged
expose the tension between the seen and the unseen
It will interpret space
It will reinterpret space
It will be selfish
let you to think for your self
make you aware of your surroundings, yet let you forget your surroundings as well
allow you to get lost in your own head

You are not an observer
You are a part of this space as it is a part of you
It’s life is your own, you are it’s author
